Day, Sunset or Evening: When to Take a Budapest Prosecco Cruise

For Parliament and the Castle lit up, take a prosecco cruise after dark: from November that means any sailing from about 16:45 (early November) to 16:15 (December), and in June any sailing after about 21:00. Sunset times for Budapest in 2026-27 from timeanddate.com and sunrise-and-sunset.com, read in October 2026. Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, which moves late-October sunsets about an hour earlier.
The city lights come on 15 to 20 minutes after sunset. So a sailing that leaves just before sunset gets both: the light going, then the buildings lit on the way back.
Which departure to pick
- For the lit city: any sailing from about 20 minutes after sunset. In late October 2026 Duna-Weser reviewers on the 18:45 and 20:30 sailings describe the buildings all lit up.
- For both: the sailing just before sunset. One October 2026 reviewer recommends the 17:00 Duna-Weser sailing in winter for the end of the sunset and the lights coming on.
- Not too late: one reviewer on a 23:00 sailing in October 2026 found most of the riverside lights going off as the boat left. Before about 22:00 is the safer choice for the illuminations.
- For daylight photos: a midday or early-afternoon sailing, with the hills and the river in full light. The Duna-Weser cruise has daylight departures; the evening-only boats do not.
The lights depend on more than the clock. The decorative lighting went off at the turn of July and August 2026, during the heatwave and the low-water outage at the Paks nuclear plant: the city’s buildings on the mayor’s order, Parliament by the Speaker’s office and Buda Castle by the Castle Administration. We found no official notice of the lights going back on. Mahart’s night-cruise listing says the Parliament and Castle lights were back from 8 August, and reviews from September and October 2026 describe Parliament and the bridges lit again. Landmark lighting cannot be guaranteed on any date.
The evening-only boats
Three of the unlimited boats sail in the evening only, or mostly:
- Danube Flow’s evening cruise is the shortest, 55 minutes, with prosecco, house wine, draught beer and soft drinks, an open deck and a heated lounge. There is no commentary. It checks in at Dock 4 on Carl Lutz rakpart by Margaret Bridge.
- The Floating Lotus runs its evening sailings with unlimited Aperol and prosecco from Petőfi tér, 75 minutes with the rooftop terrace and an English audio guide by QR code.
- Sip & Sail boards at 18:00 and 20:00 at Akadémia Dock 2, for guests aged 18 and over. From November both sailings leave well after dark.

In winter
From November the open decks are cold. Reviewers in late October 2026 found the top deck chilly and suggested a warm drink; one asked for mulled wine, which is exactly what Silverline’s winter mulled wine cruise pours.
